Bengal registered a 172-run thumping win over Orissa on the last day of their three-day Ranji Trophy East Zone match at Veer Surendra Sai Stadium in Sambalpur today. This was Bengal’s 20th win in 21 Ranji Trophy matches against Orissa.
Batting first, Bengal made a healthy total of 287, thanks to a half-century each by Gopal Bose and Satyabrata Mukherjee. Arun Patel was most successful Orissa bowler with four wickets for 81 runs, while Sujit Mohanty picked up three for 34.
In reply, Orissa were bowled out for 151 and conceded a lead of 136 runs. In the second innings, Bengal declared at 146 for two and set a daunting target of 283 runs for Orissa to win the match. But the home team made a meek surrender as they were dismissed for 110. Orissa top-order batsman M Maisonia made his first-class debut in this match.
